What $249 a Year Buys, and What It Does Not

The Brand Is Worth Something

Among consumer legal brands, LegalZoom is the one almost everybody has heard of, and that counts for something real. A company operating at that scale for decades has settled systems, an escalation path when something goes sideways, and a long enough public record that a cautious owner can look it up before signing. If paying more for a name you already trust makes the decision easier, that is a legitimate reason, and sneering at it would be cheap.

$249 a Year, Renewing on Its Own

Registered agent service runs $249 annually and renews automatically. Our July 2026 check turned up no introductory rate, no free first year, and no promotional pricing attached to it. The number is simply the number, in year one and year six alike. Credit where it is due, that beats a teaser that quietly doubles later.

It is also the highest flat price in the Maine market we survey. For local scale: the annual report a Maine LLC files under 31 M.R.S. § 1665 costs $85 for a domestic company. The state's own yearly paperwork comes to roughly a third of what this agent line costs.

What the Statute Actually Requires

Strip the branding away and the job description is short. A Maine registered agent takes delivery of service of process and official state mail at a physical street address inside Maine, during business hours, and gets it to you fast enough that your response deadlines survive. That is the whole of it. Nothing in Maine law scales the duty to the fee, so a $249 agent and a $99 agent are being asked for identical performance.

Where the $99 Goes

$99 covers the year and $99 renews it. Included: anything served on us gets scanned the same business day, an email goes out as the document uploads, the portal holds everything we have ever received for you, our Maine address occupies the public record in place of your home one, and a reminder reaches you before June 1 comes around. One checkout, one product, nothing to decline.

We will not tell you $99 is the floor. BetterLegal publishes $90, and you can find it in the table on our price rankings page. Among the lowest flat rates in Maine is a claim we can defend. Cheapest is not.

What Maine Charges to Replace LegalZoom

Thirty-five dollars and a stamp. The filing is Form CLK/RA 3, Maine's statement of appointment or change for the clerk and registered agent role, and it reaches the Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions inside the Secretary of State's office by ordinary post. Expedited handling is optional at $50 for next-day or $100 for same-day.

One warning about that fee, because bad guidance circulates. The form header prints two rates, and the lower one belongs to nonprofit corporations organized under Title 13-B. An LLC pays $35. If a guide told you otherwise, it read the wrong line.

There is a blank on that form for the incoming agent's name and Maine address, and a blank cannot be left empty. That single fact settles the order of operations: engage the replacement, then file, then confirm the record, then cancel LegalZoom. Auto-renewal changes nothing about the sequence.
