Consistent Pricing, Rarer Than It Should Be

The registered agent line at Rocket Lawyer costs $125 annually, and that figure holds at every membership tier. Pause on it for a second. Plenty of vendors in this category run a low entry rate that steps up on renewal, or price the same service differently depending on which package you clicked into. Rocket Lawyer does neither. What you see in month one is what posts in year four, with no tier arithmetic to reverse-engineer.

The Question Is Scope, Not Honesty

Our objection has nothing to do with the price being wrong and everything to do with what it comes attached to. Rocket Lawyer sells a legal platform: document templates, contract builders, attorney consultations, an e-signature workflow, and registered agent service occupying one component inside all that. For an owner who will use the rest of it, the bundle is defensible and possibly a bargain.

For an owner who arrived because Maine requires an agent and for no other reason, the calculation inverts. You are financing a toolkit in order to obtain one tool. The templates go unopened, the consult hours expire unused, and the actual deliverable is somebody accepting an envelope at a Maine address.

Two questions, then, not one. Do you want a legal subscription? Separately, who should hold your Maine agent appointment? Answer them independently and the right purchase becomes obvious in either direction.

What Maine Grades

Here is the part that makes the scope question concrete. Maine sorts registered agents into two kinds. One kind files a state listing under 5 M.R.S. § 106, earns the commercial label, and shows up on entity filings as a name plus a public CRA number. Everybody else doing the job is noncommercial, recorded by name and a physical Maine street address, never a PO box, because the whole point is that a person can be handed papers at a real door.

Notice what is absent from that framework. Contract libraries are not in it. Attorney consult minutes are not in it. Maine evaluates an address, an availability window, and a name on a record. Every dollar spent above what that costs is buying something the statute never asked for.

$99, One Line, One Invoice

The fee is $35 for a for-profit entity, which is every LLC reading this. Do not be misled by the second, lower figure printed beside it in the form header. That one is reserved for nonprofit corporations formed under Title 13-B and does not apply to you. Send the completed form and a check to the Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, which is where the Secretary of State keeps entity records. No electronic filing route exists for this particular change. If you need it fast, $50 buys next-day processing and $100 buys same-day.

Keep the seat occupied throughout. The form does not accept a vacancy. It asks who is taking over, which means your successor is chosen before the envelope gets sealed.
